Edith Younger Edmunds | Amy Edmunds
Edith Younger Edmunds is a 100-year-old quilt artist and storyteller whose life has been stitched together with creativity, care, and community. She first bought her treadle sewing machine in the early 1950s as a licensed cosmetologist and used it for decades to create everything from custom clothing to curtains — and even a debutante gown. A loving mother and neighbor, her hands were always busy helping others look and feel their best. Inspired by an article about the secret codes in Underground Railroad quilts, Edith began recreating the patterns herself, bringing history to life one stitch at a time. Secret Stitches is her way of passing that legacy on to a new generation.

Amy Edmunds, co-author and daughter, also learned to sew at an early age. She made her own clothes from middle school through her college years.

When the pandemic brought her from the classroom to care for her mother, their discussions about the Underground Railroad evolved into a shared passion. Together, they created “Life in Stitches” as a dynamic live performance and quilt exhibition that captivates both children and adult audiences nationwide.
